In line with the new innovation in the practice of pharmacy, this department operates decentralized pharmaceutical services, giving rise to ten (10) pharmacy units in the department. They are:-

  1. Central Drug Store
  2. Pharmacy Out Patient
  3. Pharmacy Medical Ward
  4. Accident & Emergency Pharmacy
  5. Children Ward/Outpatient Pharmacy
  6.  Surgical Pharmacy
  7. HIV/AIDS Pharmacy
  8. Post Natal Pharmacy
  9. Antenatal Pharmacy

This is to enhance effective patient care as pharmaceutical services are being provided at the patient‘s care area. The purpose is to achieve positive therapeutic outcome that will reduce patient’s stay in the hospital, decrease mortality and morbidity and improve patient quality of life.

Services / Activities Rendered:

  • Procurement, storage and distribution of quality drugs.
  • Monitoring and control of rational drug use.
  • Dispensing, education and counseling of patients on      their therapy
  • Unit Dose Dispensing (UDDS), this is the new method of      dispensing drugs for patients in the ward.
  • 24 hours services at the Accident and Emergency Unit,      and Internal Medicine Pharmacy.
  • Drug information services to prescribers, nurses,      paramedical staff, patients and the general public.
  • Conducts research, especially in drug utilization      studies.
  • Operates a viable DRF.
  • Patient centre care is what operates at UUTH with      pharmacy units in major service areas of the Hospital, e.g. see attached      list.
  • The department also has Central Drug Store and a      Quality Assurance Unit.
  • Daily Ward Rounds are done by ward pharmacists for      proper monitory of patients’ medication and provision of pharmaceutical      care.  They also collaborate with Doctors for the management of      patients’ medication.

LEVELS OF PERFORMANCE/ACHIEVEMENT
The department recorded very high achievement as it was the best department in the hospital for two (2) consecutive times, justifying the reason for the existence of the department. The department has consistently won the hospital best department/revolving fund award (2006-2008).
