The department of Psychiatry is one of the clinical department in University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The unique feature of this department is in its multi-disciplinary affiliations to other clinical departments for service delivery, training and research. The department adopts the concept of team approach that recognizes the involvement of non-psychiatrists such as psychologists, Nurses, Social workers, Occupational therapists and other mental health workers in the management and treatment of mentally ill.
AVAILABLE STRUCTURE
The department operates at the Psychiatric Complex, which consists of out-patient clinic, male and female wards with private facilities, occupation therapy units, staff offices. This has gone a long way in repositioning the department as one of the modern centres, for the care of psychologically disturbed population, not only in Akwa Ibom State, but Nigeria as a whole.

Service delivery
- Emergency, outpatient and inpatient services
- Scientific meeting/seminars for postgraduate doctors and teaching of medical students is ongoing.
- Research
- Consultation – liaison services – involves collaboration with other Clinical Departments.
Future Events – Day-care Services – involves helping parents of children with well known symptoms of hyperactivity and disruptive behaviour to family and neighbours.
