by Lois Amos

A delegation from the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) recently visited the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) for the re-accreditation of its Obstetrics and Gynecology Department.

During a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director(CMD), Prof. Ememabasi Bassey, the team lead, Professor P. H. Dare, commended UUTH’s consistent record of excellence. He emphasized that accreditation was not meant to scrutinize institutions unfairly but rather to assess their performance and address any gap to enhance training and healthcare delivery. In response, the CMD welcomed the team, affirming that UUTH remains one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing hospitals. While acknowledging existing challenges, he assured that the management was actively working to improve the system.Professor Bassey further highlighted ongoing developments, including the completion of a new antenatal block and plans for a new gynaecology block. He also revealed that UUTH was among six centres approved to establish a Mother and Child Centre and will commence In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatments by April.
