The Chief Medical Director of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital Uyo, Professor Etete Peters has been honoured with the West African Students Union Parliament (WASUP) Honourary Award.
The Speaker of WASUP Saint Solomon Paul Atsu of the University of Ghana, who presented the award to Professor Peters recently in Uyo, said its move was in recognition of Professor Etete Peter’s untiring efforts in ensuring consistent and effective Health Care delivery to the society. According to him, Professor Peter’s nomination came in far away Institute of Journalism in Accra Ghana last year.
The Togolese born Speaker noted that WASUP was in the Chief Medical Director’s office to honour a man that has done well in his own contribution to boost the Health Sector in the State and also boost the morale of the Chief Medical Director to do more.
The West African Student Union Parliament Director of Programs and one of Nigeria’s Coordinator Nwachukwu Daniel Emeka, a student of Computer Engineering, Federal University of Technology Minna, noted that WASUP is an Organization that was established in 1924 in Great Britain by some black students who felt that the welfare of students schooling in America and Europe was not as good as those of the students of American or European origin.
The Union he said, also serves as an advocacy group for the advancement of the welfare of students schooling outside the shores of West Africa. He underscored the fact that people like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Herbert Macaulay and the rest of them cannot be forgotten for their ceaseless efforts to attain Independence for Sub-region and thus, the West African Student Union Parliament at large.
However, Nwachukwu noted that, the focus of WASUP has shifted from the fight against colonialism to regional integration of students, organizing students exchange programs, representing students in issues affecting students both on- campus and off-campus. These programs he classified into two, On-campus programs and Off-campus programs. The On-campus programs are campus based lifes and education like examination malpractice, drug abuse, campus prostitution, indecent dressing, morals entrepreneurship, job creation etc and are carried out through seminars, workshops and conferences. While the Off-campus programs basically looks at what is happening in the society, leaders who have distinguished themselves in facets of life to not only honour them, but also to make them “idio-typical index models” for people in that environment to honour, copy and mentor.
